Closure of hostels in AU Opposed
VISAKHAPATNAM: Tension prevailed at Andhra University on Thursday when hundreds of students residing in various hostels of the varsity staged a massive protest outside the Registrar’s office against the closure of hostels and messes during Christmas and Sankranti holidays from December 23 to January 18.
The varsity officials had to deploy police personnel to bring the situation under control. With the huge gathering of students, there was some kind of commotion at the varsity campus.
The protest, which started at 10 am, continued till 3 pm before the Vice Chancellor’s assurance to students of keeping the hostels open during the holidays.
The students were opposing the closure of hostels citing their preparation for competitive exams.
Every year, the varsity has been closing the messes during the Sankranti holidays. But this time, the varsity officials have also decided to close both hostels and the student messes, which had drawn the Wrath of the students.
In the morning, Registrar Prof. V. Umamaheswara Rao tried to pacify the students. But they insisted on the WC’s assurance and continued their protest.
Ch. Anand, a student, said, “Thousands of students were preparing for various competitive exams besides their academic activities. They will be certainly affected.”
